The Scottish Farmer announces the return oif the Louping Ill Vaccine in an article by Phillipa Stephen Louping ill vaccine return By PHILIPPA STEPHENIN RESPONSE to the revelation that supplies of the vaccine for the tick-borne virus louping-ill had been rendered all but non-existent by a production failure, Intervet/Schering Plough Animal Health has this week announced it had fast-tracked production of new stock. Three weeks ago, several farmers contacted The SF to report that their vets were not able to source any vaccine, and that this inability to vaccinate against the disease could cost them a substantial amount of money. Intervet/Schering Plough subsequently confirmed that they had suffered "unforeseen production difficulties". A new batch of vaccine has now been approved by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate and is now in UK wholesalers, revealed Intervet/Schering Plough, providing relief for many producers farming tick-infested upland pastures.
Defra have announced A consultation on changes to the eligibility rules for the Single Payment Scheme (SPS). The consultation was launched by Farming Minister Jane Kennedy. Strongholds are part of the Scottish Government's strategy to secure the future of the red squirrel in Scotland. The Forestry Commission welcome your views on their proposals. They want to know whether they have identified an appropriate suite of stronghold sites, together with suitable management prescriptions and support, to give red squirrels a future in mainland Scotland, in the eventuality that grey squirrels spread throughout the country. Bovine TB Advisory Group publishes final report. (DEFRA) The final report of the Bovine TB Advisory Group has been published. The report summarises the Group's work since it was convened in 2006 and makes a number of recommendations on the future approach to eradicating bovine TB, as well as including a document aimed at challenging myths and misunderstandings around bovine TB. The report marks the conclusion of the Group's work, which has provided advice to Ministers and the Chief Veterinary Officer on developing TB control policies, as well as playing an important role in communicating with farmers, vets and other stakeholders. The report will be considered by the TB Eradication Group, which makes recommendations to the Government on eradicating bovine TB in England.
