What makes heather honey special
Heather Honey is a special type of honey produced in the UK, highly valued for its characteristic strong taste and unusual, jelly texture.
Studies show heather honey has strong antibacterial power*, comparable to medical-grade honeys used worldwide. Additionally, it is packed with antioxidants and plant compounds** that may regulate inflammation, support immunity and even aid wound healing.

The heather beetle problem
The tiny Heather beetle (Lochmaea suturalis) may look harmless, but when its numbers boom it can strip the leaves off heather plants, leaving vast swathes of moorland bare and unable to produce the nectar that gives rich heather honey its colour and flavour.
A honey company in the North of England reportedly produced just 3 of the expected 10 tons of heather honey this year, due to beetle damage and poor nectar flow. Heather honey is known to be one of the most premium honeys that can be produced in the UK, so any reduction in yield stands to be a significant issue for bee farmers.
With outbreaks of the Heather beetle threatening vast areas of moorland, The Heather Trust is prioritising research and habitat recovery to protect honey production and biodiversity.
